Nescafe Classic vs Nescafe Gold, What is Different?

nescafe classic vs gold

If you’ve ever stood in the coffee aisle staring at two very similar-looking jars labeled Nescafé Classic and Nescafé Gold, wondering if the extra coins for the Gold version are actually worth it, you’re not alone.

Both are instant coffees, both promise that “coffee kick”, and both come from the same Nestlé family. So…what’s the actual difference?

1. How They’re Made

Nescafé Classic is made using spray-dried 100% Robusta coffee beans. Robusta beans are known for being strong, bitter, and high in caffeine. The spray-drying process is cost-effective but sacrifices some aroma and complexity. Translation: it’s fast, functional coffee.

Nescafé Gold, on the other hand, is made using a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans(60:40).

Arabica beans are smoother, more aromatic, and generally considered higher quality.

Nescafé Gold is also freeze-dried—a gentler process that helps preserve flavor and aroma as high heat is not used, unlike spray-drying.

In short, Nescafe Classic is quick and punchy. Nescafe Gold is refined and mellow.

2. Taste and Flavor

Nescafé Classic has a bold, slightly bitter taste with a strong coffee aroma. It’s not exactly subtle—it’s coffee yells. Great if you want a caffeine jolt and don’t mind a rougher finish.

Nescafé Gold is smoother, with a more balanced and rounded flavor. You’ll notice hints of chocolatey or nutty notes depending on your palate. It’s less acidic and bitter than Classic. Gold characteristics in taste are thanks to the Arabica beans used

3. Texture and Aroma

Classic has granules that look like broken gravel, dissolve quickly, but can leave a faint gritty after-texture if not stirred well.

Or some granules will just float at the surface of your coffee.

The aroma is sharp and to the point, smells like… coffee. Generic, burnt, strong coffee.

Gold is more elegant. The granules are lighter, more delicate, and dissolve more cleanly. Its aroma is more fragrant and luxurious, dare I say.

4. Caffeine Content

Both contain caffeine, but Nescafé Classic usually packs a bigger punch. Robusta beans naturally contain more of it, and since Classic is 100% Robusta, it is stronger.

An 8-ounce cup of Nescafé Classic contains between 50 and 90 mg of caffeine, averaging out to about 70 mg per cup.

Nescafé Gold, being smoother and blended with Arabica, has slightly less caffeine but delivers a more enjoyable experience if you’re not looking to run a marathon immediately after sipping.

Nescafé Gold has about 66 mg of caffeine in a 250 ml cup, which is roughly 8.5 ounces.

5. Pricing & Value

Nescafé Classic is cheaper. It’s the budget-friendly option, often chosen by students, night-shift workers, and anyone trying to adult without emptying their wallet.

Nescafé Gold is pricier—sometimes almost double, depending on the region. But it’s considered more of a premium product, so you’re paying for the smoother taste, better process, and fancy gold label.

So, is Gold really worth it? If you care about taste and enjoy coffee for the experience, yes. If coffee is a functional beverage to you, Classic wins in terms of value offering.

So… Which One Should You Buy?

If you like strong, no-nonsense coffee and don’t mind a bit of bitterness, go with Nescafé Classic.

If you enjoy a smoother cup with more flavor complexity and less harshness, Nescafé Gold is your option.
